Commitment to Education
|
 The Mt. Hood Jazz Festival is committed to jazz education. To ensure that jazz remains a vibrant and integral part of our American culture, it is important to keep expanding and growing the jazz audience. Every new generation must be exposed to this art form by listening to it and by having the opportunity to perform it. It is the mission of the Gresham/Mt. Hood Jazz Association (GMHJA) to cultivate interest in jazz by providing multiple opportunities for students to interact with professional jazz artists. The following are just some of the activities and events that the GMHJA has provided this year as educational and experiential opportunities. |

Mel Brown Jazz Camp

As in the past, the GMHJA supports the Mel Brown Summer Jazz Workshop. Every summer, Brown and a select group of Northwest jazz educators get together at the Western Oregon University campus to teach promising young jazz students to become better musicians. These hands-on master workshops will take place the week after the Mt. Hood Jazz Festival at the Monmouth campus.

Carl Saunders at NW Jazz Band Festival

 Carl Saunders, trumpet artist and clinician from Los Angeles, appeared at the NW Jazz Band Festival at Mt. Hood Community College on Saturday, May 5th. Thanks to the sponsorship of the Mt. Hood Jazz Festival, MBank, Wally's Music, and NW Jazz Band Festival, hundreds of students benefited from Mr. Saunder’s visit.
He performed at a noontime concert with Portland's Tall Jazz and Tony Pacini for an audience of approximately 400 student musicians. He also conducted two jazz improvisation clinics in the afternoon, attended by approximately 200 student musicians. As a finale, Mr. Saunders performed with the Mt. Hood Community College Jazz Band at the conclusion of the NW Jazz Band Festival, for an audience of more than 1000 student musicians, teachers, parents, and friends.
